Thrillers are often films that consist of two predominant factors, tension and suspense. Although most if not all thrillers contain these they can still be split up in to other sub-categories; action, political, psychological, revenge etc... Thrillers usually aim to keep their audience pinned to their seat and leave them guessing about what's going to happen next, a good example of this shutter island which is a very deep psychological thriller which leaves the audience asking many questions about the film after almost every scene.
The iconography and audio visual styles are two very important factors in the thriller genre. Thrillers are almost always set an a modern enviroment like a city, this gives the film a more tense and action packed feel to it as everything in the enviroment is bigger. When it comes to action thrillers for example the audio visual style consists of guns and explosives and for the audio it's loud music and sounds of explosions which creates the suspence and tension that is usally created from a thriller
